The after birth in mom & baby
After physiological birth, not only does the baby transition to oxygenated air, the mother also transitions with the hormonal shift occurring in her body. One might feel a bit euphoric, or high, or "out-of-it". Some may take a few moments to gather themselves before they touch or see their baby for the first time. This is "The Pause".
I've witnessed birth where baby was born, and the mother sat there with her eyes closed, un-moving, in relief that labor was over, in no hurry to claim their child.
I've witnessed baby shoot out under water to the opposite side of the birth pool. Lying there, with arms extended out, as both parents stared in shock. (Pictured)
I've witnessed land birth on all fours where baby was fully birthed and gently placed between her legs so that she could bring baby to her chest. Taking a couple moments to fully grasp that baby has been born before she reached down to claim her baby.
I've witnessed baby be placed on moms chest, being wrapped up in her arms, as her head falls back in a state of relief. In no hurry to glance at baby or learn the surprise biological gender; just holding baby close in that pause.
I've witnessed the pause myself, as well as with clients; and it is always glorious! It is important not to rush or add chaos to these moments immediately postpartum. Sometimes after a few moments a gentle, "Your baby is here. You can pick up your baby when you are ready" is helpful, but for the most part, let the pause BE.
After all, 2 individuals were just born. Allow them to bask.
